Exhibition for 2009 Athabaskan Images 'By George Sherlock' July 2009 Award winning artist George Sherlock was born in Liverpool and educated at Liverpool College of Art. As an established artist he later developed the theoretical side of his work at Birmingham University. He has exhibited widely throughout the UK and internationally. For many years, George has been creating paintings that fully exploit the adhesive qualities of acrylic. The images appear to be painted but are in fact transferred on to the canvas surface by a process using large hand-made transfers. The work in this series was inspired by family history and a hardly recorded naval engagement during the closing stages of the Second World War. His uncle, a rating in the Canadian navy, served on a Destroyer, the Athabaskan, sunk by a German"E" boat off Brest on the 29th April 1944.
