Austin depicts the routine activities of urban and country life with wit, humour and honesty. Men Cycling to work along the towpath in the early morning sun, walking the dog as the fading light of dusk transforms well-known buildings into a backdrop of irregular shapes, a farmer and his sheepdog making their way home across the fells silhouetted against the glowing evening sky – all are sympathetically depicted and brought to life through the artist’s expressive use of paint.
